My DIRECTV remote control is not working, how do I fix it?

Select your remote control to see how to resolve the issue.

Follow the simple steps below to troubleshoot your DIRECTV Universal Remote Control. Please note: The DIRECTV Universal Remote is not compatible with the DIRECTV Genie HD DVR. For the best experience, we strongly recommend using the Genie Remote to control your Genie HD DVR.

Solution 1: Check the remote buttons

Step 1

Make sure none of the buttons are stuck in the pressed-down position.

Remote still not responding?
Try Solution 2.

Solution 2: Verify the batteries are working

Step 1

Press and hold down the number "1" on your keypad. Make sure you see a solid green LED at the top of the remote.

Step 2

If you do not see a green light, change the batteries in your remote. Here's how:

  a. Turn your remote control over and remove the battery cover.
  b. Insert two new AA batteries and close the battery cover. If possible, use batteries from the same pack.
  c. Push and hold any button. If you see a solid green light at the top of your remote, that means the batteries are working.
  d. Press the GUIDE or MENU button on your remote.

Solution 3: Make sure your remote is in DIRECTV mode

Step 1

At the top of your remote, slide the Mode Switch to DIRECTV mode (all the way to the left).

Step 2

Press the GUIDE or MENU button on your remote. Make sure the button is not stuck in the pressed-down position.

Try Solution 4.

Solution 4: Make sure nothing is blocking the receiver's sensor or the remote's emitter

Step 1

Turn your remote control over. Wipe the top with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Step 2

Wipe the front panel of your receiver.

Step 3

Press the GUIDE or MENU button on your remote.
Remote still not responding?
Try Solution 5.

Solution 5: Reset your receiver

Step 1

Press and hold the red reset button, which is located on the front or the right side of your receiver.

Note: If you cannot locate the red reset button or do not have one, then unplug the receiver's power cord from the electrical outlet and wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.

Solution 6: Replace your remote

Step 1

Go to the My Equipment page to order a new white Universal Remote.

Note: If you subscribe to the DIRECTV Protection Plan, contact us to arrange a remote replacement.

Solution 2: Verify the batteries are working

Step 1

Press and hold down the number "1" on your keypad. Make sure you see a blinking green LED at the top of the remote.

Step 2

If you do not see a green light, change the batteries in your remote. Here's how:
  a. Turn your remote control over and remove the battery cover.
  b. Insert two new AA batteries and close the battery cover. If possible, use batteries from the same pack.
  c. Push and hold any button. If you see a solid green light at the top of your remote, that means the batteries are working.
  d. Press the GUIDE or MENU button on your remote.

Important: If pressing the GUIDE button does not display the on-screen guide, confirm your remote is paired with your receiver. Press and hold the MUTE and ENTER buttons on your remote while pointing at your Genie, Genie Mini, or Wireless Genie Mini. The screen will display Applying IR/RF Setup.

Solution 3: Reset your receiver

Step 1

Press and hold the red reset button, which is located on the front or the right side of your receiver.

Note: If you cannot locate the red reset button or do not have one, then unplug the receiver's power cord from the electrical outlet and wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.

Solution 4: Replace your remote

Step 1

Go to the My Equipment page to order a new Genie Remote.
