I got a new Genie Mini or Wireless Genie Mini to add to my Genie setup. How do I install it?

It's easy to add another Genie Mini or Wireless Genie Mini to your Genie Whole-Home HD DVR setup and start enjoying DIRECTV and a full HD DVR experience on an additional TV. Just click the appropriate link below to see step-by-step instructions.

Before you begin, please make sure your Genie HD DVR is set up, activated, and functioning.

Step 1

Connect your Genie Mini to your TV. There are two ways to connect:
  1. Option 1 (Recommended): Using an HDMI Cable. Supports High Definition video and Dolby® Digital audio. Plug one end of the cable into the HDMI port on the back of your Genie Mini. Plug the other end of the cable into the HDMI port on the back of your TV.
  2. Option 2: Using a 10-pin Mini-DIN Cable. Supports Standard Definition and High Definition (1080i or 720p) video and audio. Plug the black, 10-pin connector into the A/V Out port on the back of your Genie Mini. Plug the other ends of the cable(s) into the corresponding colored input ports on the back of your TV.

Step 2

Connect the power cord to the Genie Mini and plug it in to an electrical outlet.

Step 3

Power on your Genie Mini and your TV.

Step 4

Follow the guided setup screens on the TV connected to your Genie HD DVR:
a. Go to the Genie HD DVR to begin the Add a Client guided setup.
b. On your Remote, press MENU, select Settings & Help > Settings > Whole-Home > Manage Client > Add Clients.
c. Note the PIN that displays on the screen—you will need to enter the PIN on your Wireless Genie Mini at its location. Leave the Genie HD DVR on this screen until the setup of the Genie Mini is complete.

Step 5

Follow the guided setup screens on the TV connected to your Genie Mini:
a. Return to the location where you set up your Genie Mini.
b. Using your Remote, enter the PIN you noted in Step 4c.
c. Then select Add a New Location.
d. Next, enter a custom name for the location and select Save Name.
e. A confirmation message will appear, select OK.
f. You now have two options for applying your Genie Mini settings:
  1. Select DON'T COPY to have default DIRECTV settings added to your new Genie Mini. Then select "Watch DIRECTV" or "Browse the Guide" to complete the guide setup
  2. Select COPY to mirror the settings from an existing Genie/Genie Mini setup in your home. Next, select the location where you wish to copy the settings from. Then select "Watch DIRECTV" or "Browse the Guide" to complete the guide setup.
g. Return to the Genie HD DVR and select DONE on the Add a Client screen.

Step 6

Call us at 1-800-531-5000 to activate your Genie Mini.

Step 7

Program your DIRECTV remote control to work with your TV.

Before you begin, please make sure your Genie HD DVR is set up, activated, and functioning.

Power on your Genie Mini and your TV.

Step 4

Follow the guided setup screens on the TV connected to your Genie HD DVR:
a. Go to the Genie HD DVR to begin the Add a Client guided setup.
b. On your Remote, press MENU, select Settings & Help > Settings > Whole-Home > Manage Client > Add Clients.
c. Note the PIN that displays on the screen—you will need to enter the PIN on your Wireless Genie Mini at its location. Leave the Genie HD DVR on this screen until the setup of the Genie Mini is complete.

a. Return to the location where you set up your Genie Mini.
b. Using your Remote, enter the PIN you noted in Step 4c.
c. Then select Add a New Location.
d. Next, enter a custom name for the location and select Save Name.

f. You now have two options for applying your Genie Mini settings:
  1. Select DON'T COPY to have default DIRECTV settings added to your new Genie Mini. Then select "Watch DIRECTV" or "Browse the Guide" to complete the guide setup

g. Return to the Genie HD DVR and select DONE on the Add a Client screen.

Step 6

Call us at 1-800-531-5000 to activate your Genie Mini.

Step 7

Program your DIRECTV remote control to work with your TV.

Before you begin, please make sure your Wireless Genie Mini is placed at least four (4) feet away from the Wireless Video Bridge. The Wireless Video Bridge was part of your original Genie installation.

Step 1

Connect your Wireless Genie Mini to your TV. There are two ways to connect:

Option 1 (Recommended): Using an HDMI Cable. Supports High Definition video and Dolby® Digital audio. Plug one end of the cable into the HDMI port on the back of your Wireless Genie Mini. Plug the other end of the cable into the HDMI port on the back of your TV.

Option 2: Using a 10-pin Mini-DIN Cable. Supports Standard Definition and High Definition (1080i or 720p) video and audio. Plug the black, 10-pin connector into the A/V Out port on the back of your Wireless Genie Mini. Plug the other ends of the cable(s) into the corresponding colored input ports on the back of your TV.

Step 2

Connect the power cord to the Wireless Genie Mini and plug it in to an electrical outlet.

Power on the Wireless Genie Mini and the TV.

Step 4

Follow the guided setup screens on the TV connected to your Genie HD DVR:
a. Go to the Genie HD DVR to begin the Add a Client guided setup.
b. On your Remote, press MENU, select Settings & Help, select Settings, then Whole-Home. Then select Add a Client.
c. Note the PIN that displays on the screen—you will need to enter the PIN on your Wireless Genie Mini at its location. Leave the Genie HD DVR on this screen until the setup of the Wireless Genie Mini is complete.

Step 5

Follow the guided setup screens on the TV connected to your Wireless Genie Mini:
a. Return to the location where you set up your Wireless Genie Mini.
b. Wait two minutes or until the LEDs on the Wireless Video Bridge blink green/blue.
c. Confirm that the Wireless Signal Strength icon displays three (3) GREEN bars.
d. Confirm that the LED light on the front of the Wireless Genie Mini is GREEN. If it's not, see troubleshooting instructions.
e. Then select Connect Now.
f. The Enter PIN screen will display after the connection countdown.
g. Using the DIRECTV Genie Remote Control (RC71), enter the PIN you noted in Step 2 c. Then select Add a New Location.
h. The new Wireless Genie Mini may display a flashing red LED and the screen may flash gray intermittently during this setup step.
i. Return to the Genie HD DVR and select DONE on the Add a Client screen.

When exiting the Add a Client screen on the Genie HD DVR, you may get a momentary signal interruption on the TV connected to the Wireless Genie Mini. This is normal; you'll see a clear picture shortly. If the Wireless Genie Mini attempts to download new software during this process, select OK Download. If it displays the Enter PIN screen again, enter the PIN.

Step 6

Step 7

Program your DIRECTV remote control to work with your TV.

a. Return to the location where you set up your Wireless Genie Mini.
b. Wait two minutes or until the LEDs on the Wireless Video Bridge blink green/blue.
