My equipment was shipped to me. How do I install it?

Step 1

Swap your non-working receiver with your replacement Genie receiver.

A. Disconnect and remove any adapters that were connected to the cable cord that went into the back of your old receiver.

B. Connect all the cables and accessories to your replacement receiver, connecting the power cord last.

C. Power on your replacement receiver and your TV.

Step 3

Insert your new access card as shown in the image to the right. The chip should be facing down with the logo or picture facing up. Your new access card should be found taped to the top of your replacement receiver in a plastic sleeve.

Note: On some receiver models, the access card slot is on the right side of the receiver.

Step 4

Follow the guided setup screens on your TV. When you get to the Satellite Dish Setup screen, keep the default settings as they are and leave the Order ID field blank. Simply select Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

Step 5

Activate your receiver online or call our automated activation line at 1-800-388-6597.

Note: You may need your access card number, receiver ID and model number, all of which can be found on the barcode sticker on the outside of the box your replacement receiver came in.

Step 6

Complete your setup by following the guided screens to the end. If you are prompted to program your remote control, follow the onscreen instructions or see our online remote control setup guide.

IMPORTANT: If you are replacing a Genie DVR and have a multi-room viewing/Whole-Home setup, you will need to pair your Genie Minis and other clients to your replacement receiver. Please follow
these instructions to add clients to your new Genie.

Tip: To get the most out of your Genie receiver, be sure to connect your receiver to the Internet by pressing MENU > Connect Now and following the onscreen instructions.

Step 7

If you received a return shipping label for your old receiver, you must send it back to DIRECTV within 7 days to avoid non-return fees.*

Prepare your shipment as follows:

A. Pack only your previous receiver, power cord and old access card (which can be left inside the receiver) using the box your replacement receiver came in, and the packing materials provided in the box. Do not include your remote control, cables, accessories or any personal equipment such as DVD players, external hard drives, etc.

B. Tear off the receipt tab on the bottom of the return shipping label and keep for your records. Affix the return shipping label over the original shipping label.

C. Drop off your return shipment at a United States Postal Service® or FedEx® location. You can track both types of shipments on www.fedex.com, since FedEx has partnered with the United States Postal Service® for these shipments. If you did not receive a return shipping label for your old receiver, please consider recycling it to minimize waste in the landfill. You can view recycling instructions and print a pre-paid shipping label here.

*Non-return fees are based on equipment type: $45 for Genie Lite, HD receiver, Standard receiver, Wireless Video Bridge, and Genie Mini; and $135 for Genie® HD DVR, HD DVR, Standard DVR and GenieGO®.

Reset your remote.
A. On the remote, press and hold MUTE and SELECT.
B. You will see the GREEN LED blink twice.
C. Press 9-8-7 on your remote.

Step 5

Follow the guided setup screens on your TV. When you get to the Satellite Dish Setup screen, keep the default settings as-is and leave the Order ID field blank. Simply select Continue.

Return or recycle your non-working receiver. If you see a pre-paid shipping label in the plastic pouch on the outside of the box your replacement receiver arrived in, you must return your non-working receiver and access card within 7 days to avoid non-return fees.* If you don’t see a pre-paid shipping label, we encourage you to return your non-working equipment to our electronic recycling center.

*Non-return fees are based on type of receiver: Standard ($45), DVR ($135), HD ($45), HD DVR ($135), Genie™ ($135).

C. Power on your replacement Genie Mini and your TV.

Step 3

Go to the Genie HD DVR to begin the Replace a Client guided setup.
Note: You may need your serial number, MAC address, and model number. This information can be found on the barcode sticker on the outside of the box your replacement Genie Mini came in.
a. On your Remote, press MENU, select Settings & Help, select Settings, then Whole-Home. Select Manage Client and then Add Clients.
b. Note the PIN that displays on the screen-you will need to enter the PIN on your Genie Mini at its location. Leave the Genie HD DVR on this screen until the setup of the Genie Mini is complete.
If you don't have the ENTER PIN screen, skip to Step 4c below.

Follow the guided setup screens the TV connected to your replacement Genie Mini:
a. Return to the location where you set up your Genie Mini.
b. Using the DIRECTV Genie Remote Control, enter the PIN you noted in Step 3b. Then select Add a New Location.
c. Return to the Genie HD DVR and select Done on the Add a Client screen.
If your Genie Mini displays the Enter PIN screen again after the two-minute connection countdown, please call 1-800-531-5000 to complete your activation.

Return your non-working Genie Mini. You must return it within 7 days to avoid non-return fee of $45.

C. Power on your Wireless Genie Mini and your TV. "Connecting to Video Bridge" screen should appear.

Go to the Genie HD DVR to begin the Replace a Client guided setup.
Note: You may need your serial number, MAC address, and model number. This information can be found on the barcode sticker on the outside of the box your replacement Wireless Genie Mini came in.
a. On your Remote, press MENU, select Settings & Help, select Settings, then Whole-Home. Select Manage Client and then Add Clients.
b. Note the PIN that displays on the screen-you will need to enter the PIN on your Genie Mini at its location. Leave the Genie HD DVR on this screen until the setup of the Wireless Genie Mini is complete.

Step 4

Follow the guided setup screens on the TV connected to your replacement Wireless Genie Mini:
a. Return to the location where you set up your Wireless Genie Mini.
b. Wait two minutes or until the Connect Now label is active.
c. Confirm that the Wireless Signal Strength icon displays three (3) GREEN bars. If it doesn't, see troubleshooting instructions.
d. Select Connect Now.
e. The Enter PIN screen will display after the connection countdown.
f. Using your remote control, enter the PIN you noted in Step 3b. Then select Replace a Location. Select the Client that you wish to remove and select Replace. Confirm your choice by selecting Yes, Replace.
The new Wireless Genie Mini may display a flashing red LED and the screen may flash gray intermittently during this setup step.
g. Return to the Genie HD DVR and select DONE on the Add a Client screen.
If the Wireless Genie Mini displays the ENTER PIN screen again after the two-minute connection countdown, please call 1-800-531-5000 to complete your activation.

Before you begin, please make sure your Wireless Genie Mini is placed at least four (4) feet away from the Wireless Video Bridge. The Wireless Video Bridge was part of your original Genie installation.
