System Requirements

The DIRECTV app for Apple Watch works with Internet-connected HD DVRs (models HR44, HR34, HR24, HR23, HR22, HR21, HR20). It also works with select Internet-connected HD receivers (models H25, H24, H23, H22, H21). Please note: Genie Minis and Wireless Genie Minis are not supported at this time.

IMPORTANT TIP: Before you start using your Apple Watch, make sure your receiver is set up correctly. Go to your receiver’s MENU, then select Settings & Help > Settings > Whole-Home > External Device. Make sure “Current Program” is set to Allow. Once you’re done, please re-open the DIRECTV app on your iPhone and Apple Watch.

Apple only supports Apple Watch on the iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6 and 6 Plus running iOS 8.3 or higher.

General Information & Setup

You can use your Apple Watch to control the playing of our extensive content library available on your HD DVR. Play, pause, rewind, and fast forward live TV, On Demand and recorded shows. Plus, set your HD DVR to record, navigate and select options from the on-screen guide, playlist, and menu.

There is no separate DIRECTV app needed for the Apple Watch. Download the latest DIRECTV app from the Apple App store on your iPhone 5 (and above) to start using DIRECTV on your Apple Watch.

Follow the steps below:

1. Open the iPhone that is paired with your Apple Watch.
2. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
3. Tap "Search" to visit the Apple Watch App Store.
4. Search for the DIRECTV app.

  • If the DIRECTV app is already on your iPhone, you will see "Open".
  • If you have previously downloaded the app, but it is not currently on your iPhone, you will see the iCloud icon.
  • If you have not downloaded the DIRECTV app, select "Get".

5. Once the app is downloaded on your phone, it will sync with your watch automatically.

If the app does not show up, navigate to the My Watch Section - Scroll the list of apps until you see DIRECTV - Tap on DIRECTV. On the next screen, set "Show App on Apple Watch" to On (Green). After a few minutes you should see the DIRECTV app on your Apple Watch.

6. Open, and enjoy!

When you are in the same home network as your connected receivers, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Navigate to the My Watch section. Scroll the list of apps until you see DIRECTV, then tap on DIRECTV. On the following screen, set "Show App on Apple Watch" to On (Green). After a few minutes you should see the DIRECTV app on your Apple Watch.

No, as of right now Genie Minis can only be controlled by iPhone apps and through your receiver.

No, you cannot use guest mode in the DIRECTV app on the Apple Watch. In order to use any of our app features on Apple Watch, you must be signed in to your DIRECTV account on your iPhone.

Troubleshooting

The following must be happening for your Apple Watch to not lose connection with your DIRECTV app if you close it on your phone:

  • Your Apple Watch must be on the same home network as your connected receivers.
  • You must have Background App Refresh turned on for the DIRECTV app in your iOS settings.
  • You must be signed in to the DIRECTV account on your iPhone.
  • Make sure that you have "Remember Login" checked in the DIRECTV app. This is located in Settings & Help - Settings - Login Settings.

If your Apple Watch is not connecting, go to your receiver's MENU, then select Settings & Help > Settings > Whole Home > External Device. Make sure that “External Access” is set to Allow and not to Block.

Please follow these steps:

1. Make sure your receiver is powered on.
2. Go to your receiver’s MENU, then select Settings & Help > Settings > Whole-Home > External Device. Make sure all the settings on this screen are set to Allow or Share, like this:

  • External Access - Allow
  • Current Program - Allow
  • Recordings - Allow
  • Recently Watched - Share

3. Once you’re done, please re-open the DIRECTV app on your iPhone and Apple Watch.
