Why shouldn’t I connect my Genie HD DVR to my 4K TV?

The Genie HD DVR (Model HR 54) cannot display 4K content and thus was designed to connect to a non-4K TV. In order to view 4K content on a 4K TV that's connected to your Genie HD DVR, you need a DIRECTV 4K client. If your Genie HD DVR is connected to a DIRECTV Ready 4K TV, the 4K client is already built in and no additional equipment is required. However, if your Genie HD DVR is connected to a 4K TV that is not DIRECTV Ready, you will need to connect your 4K TV to a 4K Genie Mini (Model C61K).

There is a fee of $7/mo. for each receiver and/or Genie Mini/DIRECTV Ready TV/Device on your account. In the event the DIRECTV 4K Ready TV is the only television connected to DIRECTV service, there will be an additional charge of $7/mo. because your Genie HD DVR and your DIRECTV 4K client must both be active. Advanced Receiver Service fee also applies.
