How do I fix my Universal remote control?

Follow these tips to troubleshoot your DIRECTV Universal remote.

Note: The Universal Remote works with both non-Genie and Genie Receivers. The Genie Remote only works with Genie Receivers.

Check the remote buttons

Make sure no buttons are stuck in the pressed-down position.

Verify the batteries are working

Press and hold down the number “1” on your keypad. Make sure you see a solid green LED at the top of the remote.

If you do not see a green light, change the batteries in your remote. Here’s how:

  1. Turn your remote control over and remove the battery cover.
  2. Insert two new AA batteries and close the battery cover.
  3. Push and hold any button. If you see a solid green light at the top of your remote, that means the batteries are working.
  4. Press the GUIDE or MENU button to test your remote.

Make sure your remote is in DIRECTV mode

  1. At the top of your remote, slide the Mode Switch to DIRECTV mode (all the way to the left).
  2. Press the GUIDE or MENU button to test your remote. Make sure the button is not stuck in the pressed-down position.

Program your remote

Make sure nothing is blocking the receiver’s sensor or the remote’s emitter

  1. Turn your remote control over. Wipe the top with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  2. Wipe the front panel of your receiver.
  3. Press the GUIDE or MENU button to test your remote.

Reset your receiver

Press and hold the red reset button, located on the front or the right side of your receiver.

If you don’t see the red reset button, unplug the receiver’s power cord from the wall outlet and wait 15 seconds to plug it back in.
