How do I connect my Genie® or HD DVR to the Internet?

To get connected to the Internet, follow these steps.
Disconnected? Reconnect here.

Before you begin

Check the Internet connection on your computer or smartphone. If they can connect, your Genie® or DIRECTV HD DVR will be able to as well.

Note: A minimum connection speed of 750 Kbps is required to access Video On Demand, 72-hour rewind*, and TV apps, but 2Mbps or higher is recommended. You can test your Internet speed using this tool.

If you don’t have the minimum required speed, contact your Internet service provider. If you’re an AT&T customer, you can quickly troubleshoot issues here.

*72-hour rewind available on select channels. See here for details.

You’re almost there! There are a few different ways to connect to the Internet.

For optimal results, we recommend connecting with an Ethernet cable for a reliable connection (with the exception of H44, which can only connect with Wi-Fi).

Step 1

Physically connect your Genie®/HD DVR and Internet router with an Ethernet cable. Once they’re connected, select Test Connection if prompted. Note: This may take a few moments, so give it some time.

If you’re having trouble connecting, select Back on the remote to try connecting with a wireless option.

Restart your router– unplug it for a few seconds, then plug it back in.

Contact your Internet service provider. If AT&T is your Internet service provider, you can quickly test your line or find out if there’s an outage here.

Use the chat box on this page (if available) or call Customer Care at 1-800-531-5000 and we’ll guide you through a solution.

Step 2

Congrats, you’re connected! You now have access to classic TV shows, hit movies, and everything in between with DIRECTV On Demand, you can use 72-hour rewind*, and so much more. Learn more about what you can do because you’re connected here. Happy watching!
