How do I fix my Genie remote control?

Follow these tips to troubleshoot your DIRECTV Genie remote.

Note: The DIRECTV Universal Remote is compatible with both non-Genie and Genie Receivers, but the Genie Remote only works with Genie Receivers.

Check the remote buttons

Make sure no buttons are stuck in the pressed-down position.

Verify the batteries are working

Press and hold down the number “1” on your keypad. Make sure you see a solid green LED at the top of the remote.

If you do not see a green light, change the batteries in your remote. Here’s how:

  1. Turn your remote control over and remove the battery cover.
  2. Insert two new AA batteries and close the battery cover. If possible, use batteries from the same pack.
  3. Push and hold any button. If you see a solid green light at the top of your remote, that means the batteries are working.
  4. Press the GUIDE or MENU button to test your remote.

Reprogram Remote to RF Mode

Press and hold MUTE and ENTER buttons simultaneously while pointing remote at receiver. A message appears onscreen: “Applying IR/RF set up. Please wait…..”

When pairing is successful, the following message appears: “Your remote is now set up for RF”

Reset your receiver

Press and hold the red reset button, which is located on the front or the right side of your receiver.

If you cannot locate the red reset button or do not have one, then unplug the receiver’s power cord from the electrical outlet and wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.

Replace your remote

If you see a solid Red or Green light that will not turn off or a blinking Red light when keys are pressed and your receiver is not responding to your remote control, order a replacement remote.
