How do I connect a replacement Genie receiver?

See below for step-by-step instructions on how to connect a replacement Genie receiver

Step 1
Swap your non-working receiver with your replacement Genie receiver.



Step 2

A. Disconnect and remove any adapters that were connected to the cable cord that went into the back of your old receiver.
B. Connect all the cables and accessories to your replacement receiver, connecting the power cord last.

C. Power on your replacement receiver and your TV.



Step 3

Insert your new access card as shown in the image to the right. The chip should be facing down with the logo or picture facing up. Your new access card should be found taped to the top of your replacement receiver in a plastic sleeve.

Note: On some receiver models, the access card slot is on the right side of the receiver.



Step 4
Follow the guided setup screens on your TV. When you get to the Satellite Dish Setup screen, keep the default settings as they are and leave the Order ID field blank. Simply select Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.


Step 5

Activate your receiver online or call our automated activation line at 1-800-388-6597.

Note: You may need your access card number, receiver ID and model number, all of which can be found on the barcode sticker on the outside of the box your replacement receiver came in.



Step 6

Complete your setup by following the guided screens to the end. If you are prompted to program your remote control, follow the onscreen instructions or see our online remote control setup guide.

IMPORTANT: If you are replacing a Genie DVR and have a multi-room viewing/Whole-Home setup, you will need to pair your Genie Minis and other clients to your replacement receiver. Please follow
these instructions to add clients to your new Genie.

Tip: To get the most out of your Genie receiver, be sure to connect your receiver to the Internet by pressing MENU > Connect Now and following the onscreen instructions.


Step 7

If you received a return shipping label for your old receiver, you must send it back to DIRECTV within 7 days to avoid non-return fees.*

Prepare your shipment as follows:

A. Pack only your previous receiver, power cord and old access card (which can be left inside the receiver) using the box your replacement receiver came in, and the packing materials provided in the box. Do not include your remote control, cables, accessories or any personal equipment such as DVD players, external hard drives, etc.

B. Tear off the receipt tab on the bottom of the return shipping label and keep for your records. Affix the return shipping label over the original shipping label.

C. Drop off your return shipment at a United States Postal Service® or FedEx® location. You can track both types of shipments on, since FedEx has partnered with the United States Postal Service® for these shipments. If you did not receive a return shipping label for your old receiver, please consider recycling it to minimize waste in the landfill. *Non-return fees are based on equipment type: $45 for Genie Lite, HD receiver, Standard receiver, Wireless Video Bridge, and Genie Mini; and $135 for Genie® HD DVR, HD DVR, Standard DVR and GenieGO®.
